No space to write the value means someone writes it in the margin. No expiry field, or one that conflicts with your state's rules, creates a liability that sits on your books indefinitely. Design the fields before the artwork.

• A value field: either printed denominations or a blank line long enough to write on. Do not make it decorative.
• A serial number: ask us for sequential numbering. Without it you cannot tell a duplicate from an original.
• Issue and expiry: check your state rules first. Several restrict or prohibit expiry on gift certificates.
• Recipient and issuer lines: people want to write who it is from.
• Terms: short, on the back, in readable type.

Rounded corners cost the same as square and are worth taking. They resist bending in a wallet or a card, they feel more finished, and they visually separate a certificate from an ordinary printed slip. On stock, the premium weight is the better choice more often than not here: a gift certificate has to feel like it carries value, and a flimsy one undermines the amount printed on it. Send a print-ready PDF at 300 DPI in CMYK with 0.125 inch bleed, and keep everything 0.25 inch inside the trim, further on rounded corners.
