Custom Window Decal Printing

The most expensive decal mistake is choosing the wrong material for the surface, and no automated printer will stop you doing it. A dedicated Print Concierge checks what you are applying to before anything is printed: clear vinyl on glass so the design appears to float, white vinyl on a vehicle or painted wall so the colours stay true. We also check whether the artwork will read from the distance it will actually be viewed at, which for a storefront is across a pavement, not across a desk.

Both cost the same, and picking wrong is the difference between a decal that looks professional and one that looks like a sticker someone slapped on.

• Clear vinyl: the material disappears, so only your design shows. This is what you want on glass: storefront windows, doors, display cases. Bear in mind whatever is behind the glass shows through light areas, so clear works best with bold, solid artwork.
• White vinyl: an opaque base, so colours print true regardless of what is underneath. This is what you want on vehicles, painted walls, coolers, equipment, and any dark or busy surface.

Decals are read from further away than almost anything else we print, so size is really a decision about viewing distance. An 8 x 8 works on a door at arm's length for opening hours or a card-payment notice. A 12 x 18 or 18 x 24 is the storefront workhorse, readable from across a pavement. The 24 x 24 and 24 x 36 sizes are for shop fronts on a main road and vehicle rear windows, where you have one or two seconds of a stranger's attention. Measure your glass before ordering and leave a margin, because a decal that reaches the frame is much harder to apply cleanly.

Clean the surface with glass cleaner or isopropyl alcohol and let it dry completely. Position the decal with tape along the top edge as a hinge, then peel the backing away a few inches at a time, pressing down from the centre outward with a squeegee or a credit card wrapped in cloth. Work slowly; most bubbles come from rushing. Apply above 50°F if you can, since cold vinyl is far less forgiving. Small bubbles usually disappear on their own within a day or two as the adhesive settles.
